Pool salt levels by system
Hayward, Pentair, and Jandy presets are ideal starting points—always test the water before you add salt.
Test first, then target a ppm
Salt chlorine generators need enough dissolved salt for the cell, but not so much that scaling or taste problems show up. Test the water before every major dose. The pool salt calculator asks for current ppm and target ppm so you only add the difference.
If the tested level is already above your target, fix the water with dilution—not more salt. The calculator’s add-salt line stays at zero when the target is not higher than the reading you entered.

The tool presets are ideal values, not guarantees for every serial number:
| Brand preset | Ideal ppm on Home Yard Calc |
|---|---|
| Hayward | 3,200 |
| Pentair | 3,600 |
| Jandy | 3,000 |
Open the preset list on the calculator and override the target whenever your manual disagrees.
A1 example for a fresh fill
For 10,000 gal at 0 ppm rising to 3,200 ppm, salt weight is volume × 8.345 lb/gal × Δppm ÷ 1,000,000. That is 267.0 lb—7 bags at 40 lb each.
That 267.0 lb line is the A1 lock for 10,000 gal from 0 ppm to 3,200 ppm. Enter your real volume from the pool volume calculator or from the builder sheet before you buy bags.
Pour salt into the deep end, circulate, and retest after a day of normal pump time. Repeat in smaller steps if you are close to the top of the range.
This guide explains the measurement the calculators use. It is not a design review or a soil report.

FAQ
What do the 3,200, 3,600, and 3,000 ppm presets mean?
They are ideal salt levels baked into the pool salt calculator for common Hayward, Pentair, and Jandy salt chlorine generators. Your cell manual may list a different range. Pick the closest preset, then edit the target field to match the sticker on the equipment.
Why must I enter current salt ppm?
Salt dose depends on how much is already dissolved. Adding salt when the level is already at or above the target overshoots the range and can delay chlorine production. Test with a salt test kit or meter, enter that reading, and only add when the target is higher than today’s number.
How is salt weight calculated?
The engine uses pool gallons times 8.345 lb per gallon times the ppm rise divided by one million. That is the same formula shown on the methodology page. Bag counts round up at the bag weight you select, usually 40 lb pool salt bags.
Should I pour salt into the skimmer?
No. Broadcast into the deep end with the pump running and brush until it dissolves. This guide does not cover trichlor tabs, acid washing, or algae treatments—only the salt dose math tied to the calculators on this site.
