Sod Calculator
Estimate sod for a new lawn from square footage, roll size, and pallet coverage. Rectangle layouts default to 5% waste; irregular shapes default to 10%.
Formula example
A 1,000 ft² rectangle lawn with 5% cutting waste buys 1,050.00 ft² of sod. At 10 ft² per roll that is 105 rolls, and at 500 ft² per pallet about 3 pallets—each rounded up separately.
Measuring turf area
Measure the planting area in feet, not the lot size minus guesswork. For curved beds, sketch a rectangle that contains the lawn and trim with deduct square feet, or switch to Area (ft²) with a survey or plat number.
Rolls versus pallets
Roll counts suit pickup trucks and small jobs. Pallets suit forklift delivery on large sites. The calculator shows both so you can compare quotes, but only the row you select under Buy as is treated as the primary line in the shopping list.
FAQ
Why round rolls and pallets separately?
Farms sell either rolls or pallets, and each package rounds up on its own. The default 1,000 ft² lawn at 5% waste is 1,050 ft² to buy—105 rolls at 10 ft² each and 3 pallets at 500 ft² each.
What changes when I pick Irregular?
If you have not edited waste yourself, switching to Irregular raises the suggested waste from 5% to 10%. On 1,000 ft² that becomes 1,100 ft² and 110 rolls (S11).
Why can one extra foot add a whole pallet?
Pallet coverage is a hard step. At 450 ft² per pallet, 450 ft² needs one pallet but 451 ft² needs two. Always confirm pallet size on the farm ticket.
Where do I calculate topsoil before sod?
Use the topsoil link in the results. It opens this site’s topsoil calculator with your net lawn area, 2 in depth, screened topsoil, and 10% settling.
Does this pick grass species or season?
No. Turf variety, delivery timing, irrigation, and soil testing are outside this tool. Budget extra waste if the site has many curves or obstacles.
Can I price by the square foot?
Yes—choose per ft² pricing and the estimate multiplies your unit price by the purchase square footage including waste.
