Topsoil Calculator

Estimate screened topsoil for new beds or lawn grading. Default depth is 6 in for a raised bed profile; switch to 2–3 in when you are only prepping for sod.

Purchase volume 2.04 cubic yards

Formula example

A 10 ft by 10 ft area at 6 in deep, with 10% settling and screened topsoil at 80 lb/ft³ needs 2.04 yd³ to buy (55.00 ft³). That is about 2.20 US tons, 4,400 lb, and 28 bags at 2 ft³ each. Many suppliers round bulk orders to the next 0.5 yd³, which would be 2.50 yd³ on this job.

Material densities

Default dry densities come from published soil and aggregate references. You can override density in the calculator when your supplier quotes a different number.

Material lb/ft³ ton/yd³
Screened topsoil 80 1.08
Loose dry fill 76 1.03
Loose moist fill 78 1.05

Depth for lawns versus beds

Match depth to how you will finish the surface. A full 6 in profile suits new raised beds. If you are only prepping for sod, drop depth to 2–3 in so you do not bury existing grade.

Fill versus planting soil

The material list includes dry and moist fill densities for grading projects. Keep screened topsoil selected when the goal is growing turf or perennials.

FAQ

How is 6 inches different from sod prep at 2–3 inches?

Six inches builds a new planting profile or raised bed. Two to three inches is typical when you are only loosening and leveling before sod—use a shallower depth in the calculator for that case.

What does 80 lb/ft³ mean for topsoil?

It is a loose, screened topsoil reference used in the default preset. Your supplier lab test may read higher when soil is moist or compacted in the truck.

When should I pick fill-dry 76 or fill-moist 78?

Use those entries for structural fill or rough grading, not for planting mixes. Screened topsoil stays the default for garden beds and lawn dressing in this tool.

Why show both cubic yards and tons?

Bulk yards are priced per yd³; some quarries invoice by ton. The default 10×10 ft area at 6 in with 10% settling is 2.04 yd³ and about 2.20 US tons at 80 lb/ft³.

Does settling matter on topsoil?

Fluffed soil compacts after rain and wheel traffic. The waste field models that allowance—raise it if you will roll or compact the layer.
