Paver Calculator
Size a rectangular patio or enter total square feet. Module size includes the joint by default so your order matches field layout.
Formula example
A 16 ft by 12 ft patio using 8×4 in pavers with a 1/8 in joint counts each module as 0.23 ft² (joint included). Net area 192 ft² divided by the module, plus 10% straight-pattern waste, orders 908 pavers—about 2 pallets at 480 per pallet.
Layout and waste
Field pavers are ordered in whole pieces. The tool divides net pavement area by the module square footage—paver face plus joint when that option is on—then rounds up after waste. Herringbone and other diagonal patterns usually need more cuts; that is why the herringbone preset suggests 15% waste instead of 10%.
Base and bedding links
Compacted aggregate base is typically 4–6 in deep and wider than the finished pavers. Bedding sand is often 1 in thick on the net paved area. Joint sand between pavers is not estimated here—budget that separately from your supplier’s coverage chart.
FAQ
Should the joint count in the module size?
Yes for most field layouts—the calculator defaults to including the joint so module area matches how pavers sit on sand. Turn it off only when your supplier’s coverage chart excludes gaps.
Why does herringbone default to 15% waste?
Diagonal cuts and starter rows use more pieces. The pattern picker only changes the suggested waste; module math stays the same. You can override waste anytime.
How should I set pavers per pallet?
Read the sticker on the pallet or ask your dealer—counts vary by color and thickness. Enter 0 to hide pallet math if you buy loose units only.
Where do I calculate base rock and bedding sand?
Use the links in the results. Base course opens the gravel calculator with a 4 in depth, dry crushed stone, 20% waste, and an area that adds 6 in on each side when you entered length and width. Bedding sand uses 1 in on the net paved area.
Why extend the base 6 in beyond the pavers?
Compacted base should project past the edge so borders and edge restraints sit on stone. When you enter only total square footage, add that border yourself—the link uses your net area and shows a reminder.
Does this tool design pavement structure?
No. Depth hints on the linked gravel pages are rules of thumb. A geotechnical report, engineer, or local code official still decides what your site needs.
